Thus far I give the FAM186R2A four stars. It performs well thus far (a few days), with a powerful blast of cold air. It is not too noisy.
The drawbacks were 1) the instructions -- obtuse, 2) the lack of the gasket/foam across the bottom front of this A/C for the bottom seal at the window ledge, and 3) the power cord with its 15 Amp Plug at the end of the power cord.
2) Apparently they supplied something other than what was in the directions, a piece of foam that could not be installed as they said, but I improvised with it, so it is no big deal. The window accordian expanders left & right do not make a good seal; mosquitos can come in, so one needs to improvise on that one too -- duct tape?
3) It has the idiot new style power cord with buttons on its end to test & reset, concerning which they warn u not to try to fix it if it malfunctions -- I guess they want u to pony up if needed & buy another contraption. They don't know that I wud just wire around it if it malfunctioned, since I think the risk is small. But don't do that yourself; pony up & play by the rules.
The power cord also has a male plug for a 15 Amp 240 Volt connection. Fine, my wall has 20 Amp style female outlets which have a different physical orientation. The A/C plug won't go in my wall outlet. So they tell me I gots to hire an electrician to change my wall plugs! Nuts. I just went to Ace Hardware & ponied up ~ $9 for a 15 Amp female outlet end. Then I took a 20 Amp extension cord with cut off female outlet end and attached the outlet end to the 15 Amp outlet end. So I plug the extension cord 20 Amp male plug into my wall outlet and plug the 15 Amp A/C plug into the female outlet end of my self-made adapter extention cord & laugh at any thought of hiring an electrician. Since my wall has 20 Amp capacity, I shud have not a problem w/ this. If I wanted to, I cud go & change the 20 amp circuit breakers to 15 Amps, but I won't.
Incidentally, w/ 220-240 Volt appliances, do not plug them in with the appliance on, or you may cook the plug or outlet as it arcs before contact is complete. Turn off the applicance (A/C) & turn off the circuit breaker while u are inserting electrical plugs into extension cords or the wall. Then flick on the circuit breaker, & then the A/C (or other appliance).
But these are minor considerations. I like it because it is powerful & also efficient.

I bought one of these and after eight days the electronic controls refuse to work. It does what it wants. I can't even turn it off and on. But the worst part is Fridgidaire will not honor the warranty. I been been trying to get them to have it repaired for over a month and all I get are lies and given the run around. I spent money on phone calls being put on hold because to talk to a rep I have to dial a number that is not toll free. The treatment I've received from Frididaire/Electrolux is disgraceful. They will tell you anything to get you off the phone and then they ignore your requests. I can't say what I really think of these jerks. They deserve to go bankrupt.

Normally Amazon is great when selling appliances and everyone I know who owns this unit adores it. BUT.... don't do what we did and wait a couple of weeks to take a long and hard look at the unit. If you buy this from Amazon, open it the moment you get it and first check the power cord. if we had done that before assembling the darm machine, we could have saved ourselves hours of work, buckets of sweat and about of pint of blood from the cuts my husband got trying to remove the interior packing materials that are glued on.
BUYER BEWARE on this item - Amazon shipped us a unit not intended for use in American homes. Maybe it was a mistake on the part of their supplier. I don't know. All I do know is it took 2 months to get the thing returned and get a refund.
BTW, We know it wasn't the right American plug because after trying to figure out why the plug was so weird, we took digital photos of the plug and took them to a specialty electronics store who confirmed the plug would need an American adapter to the tune of $200. We gave up and returned the AC to Amazon after a great deal of hassle.
OK, so the next week we bought the EXACT SAME UNIT at another retailer for the same price and the plug was the correct plug. Not taking any chances, we opened the box up in the store to be sure. In fact, the plug was pictured on the box. The one Amazon sent us did NOT picture the plug on the box.
Now maybe we just had bad luck. I dunno, I am only trying to help save others the unbelievable hassle we went thru trying to get Amazon to take this thing back.
My advice is to go ahead and buy this unit where you live because it really is a wonderful AC. The unit we bought locally is well-built, sturdy as a Sherman tank and attractive. If you simply MUST buy it from Amazon, be sure to check the power cord right away and if you have the same problem we did, call their customer servicer center right away and demand the return slip. Just be prepared to explain the situation carefully, SOur Rep didn't speak English very well and wasn't even sure what I was talking about with regard to the electrical issue. or that there even was a difference between European and USA power plugs. She was polite though and offered to facilitate the return. Unfortunately, she either didn't follow thru or didn't understand the problem because it took several more calls to get the return made.
I know these reviews are supposed to be about the product and not the shipping problems. However, in this case, the substitution of an International model for the American model was not a mere inconvenience, it was a hardship. It took considerable time and effort to get this corrected.
Just check the plug first thing, OK? If it's the right plug then enjoy your AC. I just am hoping to save people some trouble.

We purchased the Frigidare 18,500btu air conditioner for our 1,200sq ft garage. It works like a dream! We built it into the wall beneath the window and followed the easy instructions and, other than it's weight, it was easy to install. When we turned it on for the first time, we were very pleased as to how quiet it is. We live in hot, humid climate and within 15 minutes, the entire garage was cooled and very pleasant to work in. It comes with a remote control, has sleep, energy saving mode that when set to specific temperature, it turns off and on when it needs to keep it at that temp. Love it!

My husband & I bought this air conditioner from Lowe's last year. The electronic display stopped responding (i.e. changing temp., turning off) within a month. Lowe's replaced it after much argument (since they installed it they didn't want to return it they wanted us to go through warranty even though their return policy is 90 days) with the same unit. Now it's been a year since we replaced it and obviously the warranty period is over and our replacement unit is doing the same thing except now it first got itself stuck at 90 degrees. Sure glad these things always break in the july/august heat. My husband loves electronics and remotes but I gotta say I think less electronic fancy units probably don't break as much. :(
