"Modem does not work with Windows 7" 2010-05-26
By W. W. Mcdonald (Elizabethtown, PA United States)
The US5637 modem will not work in Windows 7. I have a Dell Inspiron 15. The 64 bit drivers for Windows 7 download and install correctly. According to my computer, everything is working properly and the green power light on the modem is on. I can even query the modem and get a response. The Device Manager shows the drivers have installed properly. However, I am unable to get a dial tone. When I try to dial a number, I get an error message that there is a problem with my modem. The computer cannot find the modem.

I have had several Information Technology computer experts from two different universities unsuccessfully attempt to solve this problem. I have emailed US Robotics support and talked to their Tech Support people on the phone. They blame the problem on the fact that my version of Windows 7 (Home) does not have the "network manager" program. This problem appears to be common with people who have purchased this protect (Google USR and Windows 7) and neither US Robotics nor Microsoft has done anything to solve it.

The bottom line is that I know own a piece of junk which I have invested more $100 in (including tech support payments).

If anyone can recommend a modem that can reliably work in Windows 7, I would appreciate it.

"Great modem for those who don't have a high speed internet connection." 2010-05-18
By Michael A. Graham (Casper, WY USA)
I bought this modem for my aunt to use to get connected to the internet, so she could check her e-mail every few days or so on her new Apple iMac. This item installed very quickly and easily. This item came with a CD with a driver, but I did not need to use it. I just plugged the phone line into the modem and then plugged the modem into the computer. After that the computer guided me through the process of setting up the modem. Not really sure why USR included the software, as it was not needed at all. While the installation and setup of this modem was a piece of cake, connecting to the internet, was not as quick. It seemed, as thought it took longer to connect then with the built in modem on her previous iMac. Also despite being somewhat annoying at times I kind of missed the noise that other modem made when connecting to the internet. I can't speak to those who run a WIndows or Linux based computer, but those using MacOS this is a good choice.

THUS FAR WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THIS ITEM TO WORK.

We have reviewed all online documentation since no printed direction

came with the item. The modem does not seem to light up indicating that

it is even passing a signal.

After 3 or 4 weeks of trying I am very dissatisfied.

"Does Not Play well with Linux and HylaFAX+ or HylaFAX" 2010-05-16
By Casey Kemp (Los Angeles, CA)
If you're running Microsoft Windows, then this modem may be for you; however, I run Centos 5.4 Linux with HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 and this modem forced me to learn more about fax modems than I ever knew before this purchase. The bottom line: if you're running Linux and HylaFAX+ or HylaFAX, this is NOT the modem to purchase. If you get a "modem on /dev/ttyACM0 appears wedged" error when sending a fax, get rid of the modem; it's the culprit. I've already ordered a TRENDnet 56K External Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560X external serial modem TRENDnet 56K External Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560X (Blue). It's gotten good reviews from those running Linux and HylaFax+. I purchased the USRobotics from a vendor on Amazon. While Amazon's customer service is excellent, this will be my first experience doing a return with an Amazon vendor; even though I can save money, I've learned my lesson and will only by from Amazon; who needs any hassle. I gave this product one star because there wasn't a lower rating.

"Fast and easy set up" 2010-04-15
By E. Zirbel (ROCHESTER, MN, US)
I am not tech savvy but this was so easy and just what I needed to use with my MacBook. I don't always have access to wireless service and Apple no longer sells external modems. The Apple store I checked with said this would work and they are so right. I think in under 2 minutes it was installed and I was connected. Thanks so much.

 "Good Modem" 2010-02-19
By Bob
I am pleased with the modem so for. The only issue I had was loading the drivers from the supplied disc. This did not work like the instructions said. It may have been because I am using windows 7. The questions and prompts that were suppose to pop up when the modem was connected to the USB did not happen. I had to open a folder and select the set-up file manually. There were 3 set-up files in the folder. The second file was the one that had the drivers my PC needed. After the drivers were added the modem worked great.

 "Great!!" 2010-01-30
By Tnsisu (Bybee, Tennessee United States)
The modem on my computer went out - go figure - Being in a rural area, hi-tech has not yet reached us so my only access to the internet is dialup. I thought about taking my desktop in to be fixed but after doing more research I found this and ordered it. My other reasoning was since many new computers don't have a phone line jack, it wouldn't be a waste down the road when I buy a new computer providing it worked as described. It did. I've been using it a month now and no issues!

Talk about ease of installation! The hardest part was getting to the USB port behind my computer and that was no big deal. Plug the unit in and away we went. There's no loss of speed and has worked better than expected. I'm very happy with it and it saved me labor charges or my time and effort to find and install the right modem. Could be a little cheaper, though.

"Bad customer and technical support" 2010-01-07
By SThomas (Moreno Valley, CA United States)
After reading two only reviews about this product on Amazon, I purchased it. I couldn't make it work with their installation instructrion. It showed that the driver installation failed. On the product package, it listed 24 hours support. In fact, it wasn't; it was like sending an e-mail contact, no phone numbers. I tried to get some helps from them, wrote to them twice with detailed my vista OS and problem of installation. Finally, one week after their technical support guy wrote back and gave me an answer unrelated to my question and problem. So, I wouldn't buy any products from this company because of lack customer/technical support.

"Excellent router/modem combo, but not for wireless newbies" 2010-05-26
By Patrick Kramer (USA)
Bought this router/modem combo to replace my parents dying 2Wire 1701HG gateway. It looked pretty simple to set up at first; everything was provided for me even though I didn't require it, and newbies would likely have an easier time first setting the modem to an ethernet-connected computer. Found the DSL connection easily enough with only having to shut down the firewall for a few minutes. And bam, within five minutes, the directly connected computer was online.

However, when it came to connecting the two wireless computers we have (Including my own), it presented me with a bit more of an issue. The computers would automatically find the gateway, but would not automatically connect nor configure properly when they did. I had to manually create a new connection and configure it so that it would accept the modem. Took a little bit of hair pulling to get it to connect the wireless connections up properly, even being experienced with computers. The administrator menu might be a little confusing for people who don't know what they're doing, and some functions aren't working properly because of faulty javascripting. But the admin menu features a sidebar to give a bit of a description on what is available on each menu. I just feel it wouldn't be enough for someone who hasn't done it before.

Once that was set up, everything has been working fine. It has a slight overheating problem, so I would suggest using the stands that come with it to set the modem up in a vertical fashion. Once I did that, most of the overheating issues went away and the slowdowns I had with it.

As of writing this, it's running World of Warcraft wirelessly with a Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N PCI adapter with a latency hovering between 100-200ms, so it is at least decent for online gaming. Not perfect, but still better than I was getting.

"This is a crappy item" 2010-05-18
By Gerald Witt (Grand Prairie, TX USA)
Beware, I purchased one of these, and it worked fine after an hour of setup and a very long call to customer support. Then about 6 months later it started dropping my internet connection on the wireless. I called customer support and they tried to charge me to fix the problem, ended up sending me a new/refurbished modem that arrived with a broken antenna. I called customer support and they helped me get it back up and running and said the antennea was fine, just a piece of plastic broke. 6 months later I have lost wireless connection again. Beware when buying this product.

 "So far, so good." 2010-05-09
By Got boost? (PA)
I have had the unit running for a about 6 weeks in a small office environment.

It was easy to set up, I inserted the CD, followed the prompts and waited for the unit to set itself up, which it did on the first try. It can be set manually as well if you so choose.

It does not overheat, but I do use a USB cooling pad to keep it cool. In the past many of my routers routers have overheated themselves to death, this $15.00 cooling pad should extend its life.

Speed is acceptable, there has been no down time and I very much like the URL filter so I can keep my staff away from social sites or whatever else I decide. They simply wasted too much time on those sites.

The unit is on 24x7, with up to 14 computers online simultaneously, so far it has performed flawlessly.

"Worked fine - until it burned itself up" 2010-04-10
By JRE (Andover, MN USA)
This router worked fine and connected with Qwest easily. It has a lot of nice features for a consumer-grade router. Wireless range seems good.

However, this router runs very hot, and after about 6 months it started flaking out. At first I was having to unplug the power and reboot it more and more frequently. Then certain wired ports started having intermittent issues. Just last week (9 months after purchase) two of the wired ports completely died, and a third is working at only half speed - waiting for it to blow too. The unit is probably still in warranty but I can't afford to be without Internet access for 2 weeks while I wait for it to get fixed.

Currently looking for a decent replacement - and it won't be a Netgear.

"Worked fine for 13 months, now completely useless!" 2010-04-08
By Cujo81 (San Francisco, CA)
I had nothing but good things to say about this device...Until it stopped functioning correctly! After 13 months of service, my internet connection became slower and slower. Changed my router from the DGN2000 to the Speedstream 5100b to verify that it was the device at fault...sure was! Did a factory reset on it, still could only squeeze half the bandwidth if that out of it. Installed the latest firmware update, still performs poorly. Very disappointed in Netgear, I used to be a loyal customer until owning this absolute waste of cash. Will never purchase another Netgear product again!

Review & Description

You don't have to travel to Italy for delicious authentic gelato. Make it in the comfort of your own home with the new Gelato Maker from DeLonghi. Gelato is a dense mixture with lower fat than ice cream and no added air, which is more rich and flavorful. And with the self-refrigerating compressor, you don't have to wait for your favorite sweet treat. Built-in compressor brings the ingredients to temperatures below freezing, which frozen bowl ice cream makers cannot do. Make multiple batches continuously instead of having to wait to re-freeze the ice cream bowl. The removable stainless steel bowl makes for easy serving and cleanup and the mixing paddle effectively mixes ingredients from top to bottom for perfect consistency. Other highlights include an eco-friendly refrigerant gas that doesn't deplete the ozone layer, transparent lid and recipe book. Read more

"Works great right out of box" 2010-05-22
By Gary M. Miller (Rochester, MN)
Plugged the motorola gateway into a cable jack and power outlet and called Comcast cable company. They needed a few numbers from the unit. Comcast took less than 5 minutes to configure the gateway. Connected internet cable to computer, rebooted and I had internet. Did not need software that came with unit. I saved the owners manual to my HD. Owner manual was very detailed and easy to understand. I set up my wireless network including SSID, security and password following the directions from the manual. Everything has been working great. Paid for 6MB service, internet speed test shows I get 8-9MB. Would highly recommend. I really like the convience of having a cable modem, firewall, wired and wireless router all in one unit.

"Works for me with Comcast" 2010-05-15

This box works well for me with a Comcast internet connection.

I had to call Comcast to get them to adjust the configuration

on their end so the connection would work with this modem.

Once installed, I would swear my internet connection is a lot faster than

the old Comcast modem and old wireless box I was using before,

although I did not actually measure the difference.

 "Better than expected" 2010-05-14
By James D. Pope
Nice compact size. I expected an antenna on the outside for wireless... but it's internal. Nice. My only complaint is only one Ethernet connection on the unit. I also really like the guest wireless settings. I had visitors and was able to give them internet access with only WEP enabled (older laptop) and they were able to connect to the internet with a separate password and still not be on the same network as my other computers (no snooping). I didn't have to change a thing with my setup... just enabled what I wanted for them and gave them a separate password to access the internet only. Beautiful!
