The US5637 modem will not work in Windows 7. I have a Dell Inspiron 15. The 64 bit drivers for Windows 7 download and install correctly. According to my computer, everything is working properly and the green power light on the modem is on. I can even query the modem and get a response. The Device Manager shows the drivers have installed properly. However, I am unable to get a dial tone. When I try to dial a number, I get an error message that there is a problem with my modem. The computer cannot find the modem.
I have had several Information Technology computer experts from two different universities unsuccessfully attempt to solve this problem. I have emailed US Robotics support and talked to their Tech Support people on the phone. They blame the problem on the fact that my version of Windows 7 (Home) does not have the "network manager" program. This problem appears to be common with people who have purchased this protect (Google USR and Windows 7) and neither US Robotics nor Microsoft has done anything to solve it.
The bottom line is that I know own a piece of junk which I have invested more $100 in (including tech support payments).
If anyone can recommend a modem that can reliably work in Windows 7, I would appreciate it.

I bought this modem for my aunt to use to get connected to the internet, so she could check her e-mail every few days or so on her new Apple iMac. This item installed very quickly and easily. This item came with a CD with a driver, but I did not need to use it. I just plugged the phone line into the modem and then plugged the modem into the computer. After that the computer guided me through the process of setting up the modem. Not really sure why USR included the software, as it was not needed at all. While the installation and setup of this modem was a piece of cake, connecting to the internet, was not as quick. It seemed, as thought it took longer to connect then with the built in modem on her previous iMac. Also despite being somewhat annoying at times I kind of missed the noise that other modem made when connecting to the internet. I can't speak to those who run a WIndows or Linux based computer, but those using MacOS this is a good choice.

THUS FAR WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THIS ITEM TO WORK.
We have reviewed all online documentation since no printed direction
came with the item. The modem does not seem to light up indicating that
it is even passing a signal.
After 3 or 4 weeks of trying I am very dissatisfied.

If you're running Microsoft Windows, then this modem may be for you; however, I run Centos 5.4 Linux with HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 and this modem forced me to learn more about fax modems than I ever knew before this purchase. The bottom line: if you're running Linux and HylaFAX+ or HylaFAX, this is NOT the modem to purchase. If you get a "modem on /dev/ttyACM0 appears wedged" error when sending a fax, get rid of the modem; it's the culprit. I've already ordered a TRENDnet 56K External Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560X external serial modem TRENDnet 56K External Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560X (Blue). It's gotten good reviews from those running Linux and HylaFax+. I purchased the USRobotics from a vendor on Amazon. While Amazon's customer service is excellent, this will be my first experience doing a return with an Amazon vendor; even though I can save money, I've learned my lesson and will only by from Amazon; who needs any hassle. I gave this product one star because there wasn't a lower rating.

I am not tech savvy but this was so easy and just what I needed to use with my MacBook. I don't always have access to wireless service and Apple no longer sells external modems. The Apple store I checked with said this would work and they are so right. I think in under 2 minutes it was installed and I was connected. Thanks so much.
