 "Plays well with Charter" 2010-05-03
By David K. Miller
On the basis of several comments in these reviews, I purchased a used Surfboard 5120 cable modem from an Amazon partner to replace the modem leased from Charter. Activation with Charter took less than ten minutes and all I needed was the MAC number printed on the bottom of the modem. The Motorola modem is at least as fast as the leased equipment and it will pay for itself in six months. (I used another Surfboard modem with Comcast in the past and never had any problems with it.)

"Buy this so you don't have to pay your internet co a rental fee" 2010-04-21
By Marc (USA)
As the title says. After 3 years of paying 3.50 a month to rent a modem I realized I could get an upgraded used version on Amazon for 25.00. I wish I would have realized this earlier, but it's my fault for just paying the bill and never looking at exactly what I was paying for. This will definately save you money if you are being forced to rent one. Just call your internet provider and give them the MAC addess of the new modem once it arrives. Set up and talking to the internet company only took a few minutes. I was renting a SB5100 and I can definately tell there is a speed boost with the SB5120.

 "Works better than SB6120" 2010-04-14
By A. Cardaniuc
Bought the newer model Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 to replace the leased SB5120 from Comcast and stop paying them $5/month for a modem lease.

Installed it and speakeasy test showed about the same speeds for download and upload, but the real download speed dropped from around 1.6Mbs to around 500Kbs with the newer one. I had a tech guy from comcast to come and check what was the problem with the newer one and they said (after many trials) that the newer one will work faster only if you have their speeds over 20Mbs, and actually will be slower than the older sb5120 even if the new sb6120 is backward compatible with docsis 2.0. ..that does not make much sense to me... anyway

Changed back and fourth the new (sb6120) and old (sb5120) under my account and comcast could not give me a good explanation why with SB5120 I get download speed at 1.6Mbs and with SB6120 only 400-500Kbs.. They said that I should get their higher speed service (20Mbs or 50Mbs) to get better speed with the new DOCSIS 3.0 modem..

..so I had to return the SB6120 and buy a used SB5120 from Amazon which works as fast as the one leased from comcast with downloads over 1.5Mbs.

I have comcast service of 12Mbs or 16Mbs... the real download speed (even with a download manager/accelerator) is around 1.5-1.8Mbs. That is enough for me and I don't plan to get higher than that very soon. So this modem it is great, works fine, no drops or other issues, no restarts., always on.

It will pay for itself in seven months (bought used).

Hi, I bought a "like new" one and it works like it should. Syncs up as fast as a new unit would. The day Charter installed my service I went online at 25Mbps down / 1Mbps up, which shows this model can handle pretty decent speed, of course Charter figured it out pretty quickly and from the next day they capped the speed at the 5Mbps I am paying for.

The wires of the power adapter have been spliced by hand, but it is the right charger and the splicing was done very well.
