I purchased this modem on price alone to be used on a Linux (Centos 5) system. I discovered this is a 'windmodem' (check Wikipedia for more information on winmodems) which is to say it is unsuitable with a Linux system. I can't comment on how it works with Windows since my faxing is done solely through the Linux system.

Contrary to two other reviews, this is a great item. The best price of any USB 56K modem, and easy to install and use. True, no instructions came with it, and the disk has lots of files on it, but it says right on the box, "Plug and Play", so I did. All I did was plug the modem into a USB port, and a message came up saying, "Insert the disk to load the driver". I inserted the disk, and my computer automatically found and installed the correct driver. So, no instructions necessary. You do have to update your dial-up connection properties on your computer to point to the COM port that the USB modem is plugged into, but that took 2 seconds. So within 5 minutes, I was up and running. Great product.

I purchased two of these to work on my desktop and notebook. I tried to install one of them on my notebook and desktop and could not it to even send a fax using Windows Fax software. I kept getting a "no dial tone" error messages. I even tried its diagnostic routine, and it failed when an ATC command failed.
As I was once told, you get what you pay for. This product has a low price and it certainly lives to that attribute -- junk.

Well, it looks good, and the price is right. See the disk. it has a lot of stuff on it. None of it does any good. There are NO printed installation instructions. The paper in the box just lists its so-called features. There are read me files on the disk....about a dozen of them. Multifle hours after receiving this modem, it still does not work.
Again, don't buy it. I am sending it back.
