I decided to buy a cable modem when Comcast raised the rental price from $3 to $5/month. Hooked this up in no time, called Comcast with the MAC address, and was up and running after resetting the modem and the router. It works great. The modem comes in a box with a Linksys logo that indicates it is a "Certified Refurbished Product", and carries a 90-day factory warranty.

I look forward to saving $60/year. As a bonus, this supports the DOCSIS 2.0 standard, so I should be seeing even better throughput than the 7yo DOCSIS 1.1 modem I was renting.
