Scrumptious smells awaken Sofia and her little cat Figaro. Downstairs, Sofia s parents and older brother have already begun preparations for another menu of culinary delights at their Italian restaurant, The Fig Tree. And today is extra-special because Nonno and Nonna are coming to visit.
Sofia is determined to help in the bustling kitchen. She wants to help make something delicious for her beloved grandparents. But Mama mia! With Figaro s help, Sofia sends Papa s delicious tomato sauce flying from the food processor onto the walls, adds a few extra tablespoons of yeast to Mama s bread dough so that it rises in the oven like a giant marshmallow, and flies one of her brother s pizza pies into a ceiling fan.

Crushed, Sofia retreats with Figaro to the comfort of her favorite swing in the branches of a big, leafy fig tree. Then, with a whoosh! of wind and a few plops! of juicy figs, Sofia has an idea for a very sweet recipe all her own.
